2024

OCTOBER 6, 2024

Earlier today, we welcomed little survivor Sage to the sanctuary.
Here's her story so far …

A compassionate person brought Sage to their home to care for her after finding her with significant injuries at a friend's place. Sage was the sole survivor amongst her flock mates; how she was still alive is unknown.

With a lot of support from her friends, Sage has come a long way from when she was initially found injured. However, Sage is emaciated and needs to put on significant weight to bounce back.
We don't know how skinny she was before her beak injury, but she's life-threateningly thin now.

Earlier this week, the upper part of Sage’s beak fell off. Her beak had significant trauma from whatever had happened. The bottom part does have some damage as well.
We'll watch Sage closely to monitor her food intake and overall health status as we see how she fares.

OCTOBER 8, 2024

Sage visited the vet today to get a better understanding of the challenges she's facing. It’s obvious that her upper beak is a problem, she’s severely underweight, and she’s showing signs of pain (both from moulting and her injuries).
What wasn't so obvious was what the vet noticed: her bottom jaw may also be a problem and causing pain. I'm glad we went with our gut and didn't force the issue of forced feeding Sage when she strongly objected. If Sage's bottom jaw is also compromised we could have easily made things so much worse.
Between the vet and vet tech, two fabulous people who take the time to talk through the options, observe Sage’s behaviour, and test out some feeding methods, a plan was established.
The plan for the next few days includes subcutaneous fluids, two additional pain medications for a total of 3 (none of which are taken orally as that would require touching Sage’s beak unnecessarily, exasperating the pain we're trying to control), and a feeding plan.
Sage needs to rally quickly. The hope is that the plan above along with a cozy spot inside will help her do that. 🤞

OCTOBER 10, 2024

Does Sage have food all over her?
Yes, yes she does.

Did she get it all over herself?
Yes, yes she did.

Did she get way more food into her system today than she got all over herself?
Yes, she sure did!  🥳
