Aunt Viola is a sweet, friendly hen with a big personality and is already winning hearts.
Rescued from the same property as Gladys, Viola had been living in overcrowded, unsanitary conditions without consistent access to food, water, or shelter.
A teenager running an unregulated backyard operation bred the animals for profit. As the number of animals grew, they were exploited, neglected, and left without basic care. What happened to them wasn’t a case of being overwhelmed—it was the result of treating lives like products.
Many animals remain on the property, and despite the suffering already caused, the individual responsible has expressed plans to continue. This is a painful reminder that few protections exist for farmed animals and that sanctuaries are often one of the only safety nets they have.
We’re thankful to Animal Protection Reform - PEI for their rescue efforts, as many animals like Viola don’t get a second chance.
Despite everything Viola has been through, she’s remained incredibly social and curious. Once her quarantine is complete, we expect she’ll settle in beautifully with our existing flock and start making more friends soon.
