It’s time to introduce Avril!
Avril arrived almost a week ago now, on Easter Monday. She’s a tiny 8-month-old lamb whom we were calling “little lady” until she was given the name Avril (April in French).
Thank you to everyone who was involved in bringing her to LP as her forever home! You know who you are, and you’re indeed her angels on earth!
Since her arrival, she’s been hanging out in the front half of the forest house (our quarantine space). Em and Pen have the back half of the house, plus the forest and their pasture, located at the bottom of a trail through the forest.
Avril is a bit taller than Rosie but pretty close to the same weight. Avril was described as “a runt and very, very tiny and friendly.” Which is absolutely true! She’s one of the friendliest and most socialized lambs upon intake that we’ve ever seen here. The exception was Nancy and Sid, who were cared for by Cedar Row Farm Sanctuary before being transferred to Lily’s Place for their forever home. Even our resident snuggle bug, Annie, wasn’t instantly cool with humans when she arrived at 10 weeks old.
Avril was also described as a ewe (female sheep) who would “make a better pet than food.” It’s no secret that we think that about every sheep ;)
She had a name before coming into our care, but we changed it to give her a fresh start, especially after her adorableness had garnered a lot of attention before she arrived at LP on Easter Monday.
Her intake procedures are well underway, including getting her caught up on routine care and disease screening. We really lucked out when Tim called on Tuesday to book her vet check, because Dr. Hourihan was able to come out that afternoon!
SIDE NOTE: This is what it looks like to have our provincial veterinarians - while we pay for their services, 0.032% of the provincial budget keeps the provincial veterinarians & the lab in place. That 0.032% amounts to less than a dollar per month per NB resident to ensure the vets are just a call away. The lab offers a wide range of services (that we also pay for), one of which is testing samples like those collected from Avril on Tuesday. The results from that testing allow us to make informed decisions which keep all the animals safe when new residents arrive.
Stay tuned - soon I’ll share a concern we had about Avril that required our vet’s expert eye and recommendations. I’ll also share some of the routine care Avril has been catching up on.
