If you’ve looked at our wishlist recently, you might have wondered why there’s a pond liner on there! However, if you know sweet Gladys, you might know exactly what is going on!
Here’s the scoop…Gladys is a very sweet, cautious, and curious duck. She can often be spotted standing beside the kiddie pool and water tanks.
While on the sidelines, she’ll splash water onto her back, but I’ve only seen her flop into the kiddie pool once. That was last year, and she got so excited about being full in the water she launched herself right out of the kiddie pool!
I haven’t seen her in the pool since. 😞
The thing is, Gladys came from a neglect situation with a lot of missing feathers. Many of those delicate feather follicles were damaged, and she never regrew the critical ones that would give her the confidence to get in and out of water tanks and pools here.
Right now, we’re hoping to put a liner in a pre-dug pond on the property (left over from the golf course) that no longer holds water. It’s right in the middle of The Littles’ (Bob, Josie, Rosie, and Avril) area and where the ducks and Freddy (a goose) like to roam around.
The pond would allow Gladys to avoid any flopping and dropping, and simply walk in.
How amazing would it be for Gladys to walk right into that pond, like her very own day at the beach, and float around until she’s ready to get out calmly (rather than launching herself out in a panic).
In fact, if she started speeding around in that pond, as she tried in the pool, she wouldn’t launch herself right out! She could zoom around all day if she wanted to!
We have a small group of volunteers ready to do the work, and we would really love to revive this swimming spot for Gladys and her friends, but we’ll need help to do it; hence the pond liner on the wishlist!

P.S. If you’d like to give Gladys a swimming area but are unable to cover the full cost of the pond liner, you can purchase Amazon eGift cards or make a donation on our site (or via e-transfer to hello) to help us reach our goal one donation at a time.
