Sid was the very first sheep to call Lily’s Place home, and over the years, he has become known for making others feel safe. He is gentle, laid back, and never in a hurry. Whether someone is big or small, young or old, Sid has a way of helping them settle into life at the sanctuary.
He has done that many times over the years.
Sid was there for Betty when she gave birth to Gracie in the middle of the night. He became step-dad Sid that night and has watched over Gracie ever since. He also helped Punky and Annie, two scared little lambs who arrived without their mother to hide behind. Sid didn’t hesitate then to take them under his (figurative) wing and raise them as his own.
Sid has often been referred to as our Wal-Mart greeter. He earned this nickname by being the first friendly face to welcome you at the sanctuary. He’s always ready to make room for everyone, including Mickey.
When Mickey the turkey was exploring the barn for the first time, she flew into the middle of the sheep area. Mickey quickly looked around and must have realized she might have made a mistake landing among the sheep. This was her first time being around sheep, and everyone was so much bigger than her. She had a lot of faces looking her way, curious about whether she was friend or foe.
Sid, however, didn’t join the others in sizing up Mickey. Sid sauntered over to greet her, just as he does with all new faces, and the two became instant friends. Mickey still visits Sid every chance she gets, and they can often be spotted hanging out together.
It’s so heartwarming to see these two very different residents enjoying each other’s company and seeking each other out.
Sid and Mickey remind us that sanctuary is not only about rescue. It is also about the fact that animals who were once injured, wayward, or in crisis, want what we all do: safety, companionship, and a life worth living.
